Hitoshi Sugai

Hitoshi Sugai ( Japanese 須 貝 等 Sugai Hitoshi ; born December 29, 1962 in Furubira , Hokkaidō ) is a former Japanese judoka . In 1985 and 1987 he was world light heavyweight champion in the weight class up to 95 kilograms.

Athletic career

At the 1985 World Championships in Seoul, 1.83 m tall Hitoshi Sugai defeated Belgian Robert Van de Walle in the semi-finals and South Korean Ha Hyung-joo in the final. In 1986 Ha Hyung-joo and Hitoshi Sugai met again in the final of the Asian Games in Seoul and this time the Korean won. A month later, Sugai defeated Belgian Robert van de Walle in the final of the Jigoro Kano Cup . At the 1987 World Championships in Essen, Sugai won the semi-finals against the German Marc Meiling and the final against the Dutch Theo Meijer . At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul Sugai lost his first fight against the French Stéphane Traineau by a small score (yuko). In 1989 Sugai took part in the World Championships in Belgrade . In the last sixteen he lost to Traineau and then retired in the hope round against Meiling.
