Jorge Fonseca

Jorge Ivayr Rodrigues da Fonseca (born October 30, 1992 in São Tomé and Príncipe ) is a Portuguese judoka . At the 2019 World Championships, he won the light heavyweight division, winning the first title for Portugal at world championships. He competes for the Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon .

Athletic career

The 1.74 m tall Jorge Fonseca has mostly competed in the light heavyweight division since 2010, in the weight class up to 100 kilograms. In 2011 he finished fifth at the Junior European Championships. In the same year he won his first Portuguese championship, more followed in 2012 and 2013. In 2013 he also won the U23 European Championships, and in 2014 he won a bronze medal. In the as part of the 2015 European Games discharged in Baku European Championships in 2015 he reached the semi-finals. After defeats against the Dutchman Henk Grol and the Belgian Toma Nikiforov , Fonseca finished in fifth place. In 2016 he competed at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and was eliminated in his second fight against the Czech Lukáš Krpálek .

After a weaker year in 2017, Fonseca finished seventh in both the European and World Championships in 2018 . In 2019, as in 2015, the European Championships as part of the 2019 European Games were held in Minsk. Fonseca was eliminated in his second fight against the Russian Arman Adamian . In the team competition, Portugal won silver behind the Russian team. Two months later at the 2019 World Championships in Tokyo , he defeated the Georgian Warlam Liparteliani in the quarter-finals and Elmar Gasimov from Azerbaijan in the semifinals . With his victory over the Russian Niyaz Ilyasow in the final, Jorge Fonseca became the first judo world champion in his country.
