Stone House (Marburg)

Stone house in Marburg at Markt 18

The stone house in Marburg survived the devastating fire of 1319, which almost destroyed the entire city. The building was built of sandstone in the Gothic style, with the stepped gable and the medieval toilet bay being typical.

The massive stone construction was unusual in Marburg at that time, as the half-timbered houses were built in the old town of Marburg until the 19th century . The stone house was inhabited from the middle of the 14th to the 19th century by important patrician and bourgeois families, landgrave officials and professors.

The Marburg registry office had its premises here for many years before it moved to the city office in Frauenbergstrasse. What remains is the wedding room, in which bridal couples say yes to this day .
