Dennis Stewart

Dennis Stewart (born May 12, 1960 in West Bromwich ) is a former British judoka who won an Olympic bronze light heavyweight medal in 1988.

Athletic career

The 1.82 m tall Stewart fought throughout his international career in light heavyweight, the weight class up to 95 kilograms. Stewart was successful in British championships from 1980, his first important international tournament was the Judo World Championships in 1985 , where he lost in his opening match against the Belgian Robert Van de Walle . He won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games . In 1987 he finished fifth at the European Championships and seventh at the World Championships . Also at the European Championships in 1988 he missed the medal ranks in fifth.

At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 he lost his first fight against the later Olympic champion Aurélio Miguel from Brazil by a referee decision. In the hope round he defeated the Icelander Bjarni Friðriksson , the Italian Yuri Fazi and in the battle for the bronze medal Jiří Sosna from Czechoslovakia, with all fights going on full time. 1989 Stewart retired from both the European Championships and the World Championships in the first round.
