Elisabeth Karlsson

Elisabeth Karlsson (born July 20, 1967 ) is a former Swedish judoka . She was world championship runner-up in 1986 and won two silver and three bronze medals at European championships.

Athletic career

Until 1986 Elisabeth Karlsson competed in the middleweight division, the weight class up to 66 kilograms. At the World Championships in 1984 she finished fifth after losing in the semifinals to the Dutch Irene de Kok and in the battle for bronze against the British Dawn Netherwood . The following year, the 1985 European Championships took place in Landskrona. Karlsson lost in the quarterfinals to Brigitte Deydier from France , in the battle for bronze she defeated Dawn Netherwood. In addition to Karlsson, Tipi Kantojärvi, another Swede, won a medal in front of a home crowd. At the 1986 European Championships in London, Karlsson defeated Dawn Netherwood in the quarterfinals and lost to Brigitte Deydier in the semifinals. In the battle for bronze she won against the Austrian Roswitha Hartl . Seven months later, the 1986 World Championships took place in Maastricht . Karlsson defeated the Belgian Godelieve Lieckens in the semifinals , in the final she was defeated by Brigitte Deydier. This was (as of 2019) the only world championship medal in judo for Sweden.

From 1987 Karlsson fought in the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 72 kilograms. At the European Championships in Paris, she lost to Belgian Ingrid Berghmans in the quarter-finals , in the battle for bronze she lost to Pole Stefania Drzewicka and finished fifth. At the 1987 World Championships in Essen , she finished seventh after Niedertlagen against Ingrid Berghmans and the French Laetitia Meignan . In 1988 Karlsson won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Pamplona . In 1989 at the European Championships in Helsinki Karlsson defeated the Dutch Marion van Dorssen in the semifinals , in the final she lost to Ingrid Berghmans. At the World Championships in 1989 she was eliminated early against the Bulgarian Galina Tsolowa . In 1991 at the European Championships in Prague Karlsson defeated the Belgian Ulla Werbrouck in the semifinals , in the final she lost to Laetitia Meignan. Their last major international tournament was the 1991 World Championships . Karlsson lost in the quarter-finals to the Japanese Yōko Tanabe and then retired in the hope round.
