Anne Åkerblom

Anne Åkerblom (born October 15, 1960 in Helsinki ) is a former Finnish judoka . She was runner-up in the European Championships in 1985 and 1989.

Athletic career

Anne Åkerblom fought in the heavyweight division as well as in the open class. In 1980 and from 1982 to 1987 she won seven Finnish championship titles in the then highest weight class over 66 kilograms in Finland , from 1988 to 1993 she won six times in the weight class over 72 kilograms.

At the world championships in 1984 she finished seventh. In 1985 at the European Championships in Landskrona , she defeated the French Florence Carlus in the semi-finals of the heavyweight division and lost to the British Sandra Bradshaw in the final . In the open class she was defeated by the Austrian Karin Posch in the round of 16 and ultimately took seventh place. The following year she finished seventh twice at the European Championships in London .

In 1989 Anne Åkerblom also competed in both weight classes at the European Championships in Helsinki . In the heavyweight division, she defeated the Italian Maria Teresa Motta in the semifinals and lost the final against the Dutch Angelique Seriese . Åkerblom dropped out early in the open class. At the 1989 World Championships she lost in the round of 16 of the heavyweight division against the Russian Swetlana Gundarenko and in the round of 16 in the open class against the French Nathalie Lupino .

At the European Championships in 1990 and 1991 Anne Åkerblom could not place in the top eight fighters. At the 1991 World Championships she was seventh in the open class. In 1992 at the European Championships in Paris , she lost in the round of 16 of the heavyweight division against Maria Teresa Motta, but fought her way up to the battle for a bronze medal in the hope round. After losing to Renata Szał from Poland , she finished fifth. At the Olympic premiere of women's judo at the 1992 Olympic tournament in Barcelona, ​​Åkerblom was eliminated with a small score (yuko) in her opening match against Beata Maksymow from Poland. The following year at the European Championships in Athens she lost in the semi-finals of the heavyweight division against Swetlana Gundarenko, in the battle for bronze she was defeated by Beata Maksymow. At the World Championships in 1993 she appeared again in both weight classes, but was eliminated early in each case.
