Marjo Vilhola

Marjo Vilhola (born October 5, 1968 ) is a former Finnish judoka . She was third in the European Championship in 1989.

Athletic career

Until 1991, Marjo Vilhola fought mostly in the super lightweight, the weight class up to 48 kilograms. In 1990 she was Finnish champion in this weight class. In 1992 and 1997 she won the championship title in half-light weight, the weight class up to 52 kilograms.

At the European Championships in Helsinki in 1989 , she defeated the Austrian Michaela Bornemann in the quarter-finals and lost in the semifinals to the British Karen Briggs . With a victory over the Italian Giovanna Tortora , the Finnish woman secured the bronze medal in front of her home crowd. Five months after the European Championships, the 1989 World Championships took place in Belgrade . Vilhola lost in the quarterfinals to the Japanese Fumiko Ezaki and then retired in the hope round. At the European Championships in 1990 and 1991 , Vilhola was eliminated after the round of 16.

After changing the weight class, Vilhola still took part in the European Championships in 1993 and 1994 , here too it ended after the round of 16. At the 1993 World Championships she was eliminated in her opening match against the Cuban Legna Verdecia .
