Fumiko Ezaki

Fumiko Ezaki or Fumiko Esaki ( Japanese 江 崎 史 子 , Ezaki Fumiko ; born September 27, 1971 ) is a former Japanese judoka who was second in the world championship three times.

Athletic career

Shortly after her 15th birthday, Fumniko Ezaki reached the final in the weight class up to 48 kg at the 1986 World Judo Championships in Maastricht . She defeated the Australian Julie Reardon , the French Fabienne Boffin and the Spanish Dolores Veguillas . In the final she was defeated by the British Karin Briggs and received the silver medal. At 15 years and 29 days, she was the youngest medalist at World Judo Championships. In the following year she beat the Brazilian Monica Angelucci , Chou Yu-Ping from Taiwan and the Canadian Lyne Poirier at the World Championships in Essen and reached the final again. There she was defeated by the Chinese Li Zhongyun .

At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, judo competitions for women were offered as part of the demonstration competitions. Fumiko Ezaki defeated the Egyptian Rehab Mahmoud El Gafy and the South Korean Cho Min-sun , in the final she was defeated by Li Zhongyun by a small score (koka). In 1989 she lost to the French Cécile Nowak in the final of the World Cup in Paris . At the World Championships in Belgrade she won the quarter-finals over the Finn Marjo Vilhola and in the semifinals over the Dutch Jessica Gal , in the final she lost to Karen Briggs. The following year, she reached the final of the season climax at the Asian Games in Beijing in 1990 for the fifth time in a row and won the title by defeating Chinese Li Aiyue . Fumiko Ezaki was still active until 1992, for international championships she could no longer qualify against Ryōko Tamura .
