Cochin ( Malayalam കൊച്ചി Kocci [ ˈkotʃi ] or പെരുമ്പടപ്പ് Perumpaṭappu ) was a princely state of British India on the Malabar coast in what is now the state of Kerala .
history
The Hindu Empire already existed in the Middle Ages . In 1405 the port city of Cochin ( Kochi ) became the capital.
From 1503 Cochin was a Portuguese, 1663 Dutch and 1795 / 1809–1947 British protectorate (see History of India ). The Rajas were raised to Maharajas in 1921 ; her full title was Maharaja Gangadhara Koviladhi Karikal Sri . On July 1, 1949, Cochin and Travancore formed the Travancore-Cochin Federation and joined India. On November 1, 1956, the principalities were abolished and the state merged with the Malabar district of the state of Madras to form the new state of Kerala .
In 1941 Cochin had an area of 3833 km² and 1.4 million inhabitants. The principality had a state post with its own stamps since 1892 .
