After meeting her again outside a restaurant, where he abruptly hugs her and gives her a portrait he made of her, Carol begins to realize that Chris might have a crush on her, even though her feelings for him are complicated there she is married to a daughter.

After Carol urges him to meet other women, Chris drives to Carol's house and kisses her, confessing that he is in love with her. Despite her deep emotional connection with Chris, Carol insists that they should try to be friends. When she returns home, she approaches her husband, who is no longer sleeping in her bedroom, and tries to initiate sex, but he refuses.

Chris stops by Carol's for breakfast, and he, Carol, and Carol's teenage daughter Hildy get along well, although the mood of Carol's husband Tom is warped. Chris is also frustrated with the fact that she is helping another convict get parole, aiding in his brother's betrayal by being friends with the man who put him in jail, and his inability to find a job .

Hildy is interested in Chris and becomes friends with him. She is surprised to learn that he values her mother so highly and credits her for helping him get through jail.

Despite her earlier words telling Chris that they can only be friends, Carol continues her emotional relationship with Chris. Chris asks Carol to spend a day with him, where they can finally be free. They meet up for the day and go to dinner and an arcade before going to a motel. They complete their relationship with Chris and Carol, who profess their love for each other. The next morning they leave the motel and are seen by Tom and Hildy. Tom attacks Chris, who hits his shin before fleeing.

Hildy disappears and is later found by Carol after some help from Chris. Carol apologizes for not paying enough attention to Hildy and preferring Chris, despite Hildy assuring her mother that she can make a difference in Chris' life. Carol admits that her and Chris' relationship was a once in a lifetime event.

Tom leaves the family home, Chris gets a job, and Hildy breaks into Chris and his brother's house, where she leaves an art sculpture that Chris recognizes as a sign of forgiveness.

Carol visits Chris and tells him that her goals are ultimately incompatible as he wants a simple life and she now longs for a more fulfilling one. Even so, she asks Chris out on a date in the hope that they will get to know each other in the present, which Chris agrees to.
