action

After being hit by a tractor trailer carrying an advertisement for an erectile dysfunction product , a woman named Eleanor wakes up to find she has stepped into the afterlife. When she is told by Michael, her mediator, that she has arrived at the “Good Place”, the “green area” (following the example of Heaven) - because of her good deeds in helping innocent people off death row and did other international humanitarian work, she realizes that there has been a mistake by being thought to be another person with the same name. In addition, upon arrival she learns that every person in the good place has a soul mate with whom they will live forever in eternity.

characters

main characters

Kristen Bell as Eleanor Shellstrop

The Arizona saleswoman who died in a disaster is accidentally sent to The Good Place for her afterlife . Eleanor quickly realizes that this must be a mistake, as she has not actually done any of the good deeds assigned to her. She then wants to earn her place at Good Place with the help of her alleged soulmate Chidi . Shellstrop was shaped by selfishness and ruthlessness during her lifetime, which she often attributes to her parents' home. However, over the course of the series, she shows remorse several times and improves her behavior both consciously and unconsciously. She also develops deep feelings for Chidi. At the end of the first season, it is she who sees through Michael and reveals that everyone is already in Bad Place .

William Jackson Harper as Chidi Anagonye

Chidi is a late ethics professor and Eleanor's alleged soulmate. He was born in Nigeria but grew up in Senegal . He is the first to find out about Eleanor's secret and does everything in his power to keep it. As a result, he begins teaching Eleanor ethics . Chidi is a very indecisive person. In order to be able to make a decision, he must first carefully consider all the possibilities, which almost always takes some time. As the series progresses, Chidi develops feelings for Eleanor.

Jameela Jamil as Tahani Al-Jamil

The wealthy philanthropist died trying to tear down a statue of her sister. She was born in Pakistan , grew up in London and went to school in France . She stood in the shadow of her little sister all her life, no matter how hard she tried to get her parents' attention. She is a good host and has raised billions of dollars for charity through her events. However, since she did her good deeds in the hope of recognition, they are not counted as good. Her positive and lively manner is a challenge, especially for Eleanor at the beginning, but a deep friendship soon develops between the two.

Ted Danson as Michael

The architect of this "The Good Place" neighborhood is particularly fond of everything unknown to humans, such as karaoke and paper clips. Michael is immortal, but nonetheless goes through an existential crisis.

In the finale of the first season it turns out that Michael is a demon who created a false paradise with the sole purpose of the residents torturing each other.

D'Arcy Carden as Janet

Janet is a programmed information database that serves as the primary source of information in the neighborhood. The wellbeing of the people is always her top priority. With every restart, she becomes a better version of herself. Janet in "Bad Place" is also portrayed by D'Arcy Carden.

Manny Jacinto as Jason Mendoza

The Florida amateur DJ died of choking in a safe during an attempted robbery. At the beginning of the Good Place, he continues the life of the silent monk "Jianyu Li", whose place he mistakenly took. When Eleanor confesses to him, drunk, that she is a flaw in the system, he confides in her. Jason is immature and has a low IQ . He falls in love with both Janet and Tahani.

The series is set to music at Lavendelfilm in Potsdam . Stefan Mittag and Andreas Hinz write the dialogue books, Sebastian Schulz directs the dialogue.

reception

The British newspaper The Guardian voted the series 69th out of the 100 best television series of the 21st century in 2019.

The series has a metascore of 82 out of 100 at Metacritic , based on 48 reviews.

At the end of the second season, Axel Schmitt from Serienjunkies.de concludes that it “[is] amazing how easy it is to create a truly innovative series. [...] One searches in vain for a particularly high production value in NBC comedy. The brightly colored backdrop is immediately recognizable as such, as are the special effects. In a way, they do old-school television here - good scripts and actors are enough. ”He also notes that the series“ manages to surprise its audience ”.
