Jameela Alia Jamil (born February 25, 1986 in Hampstead , London , England ) is a British television presenter , radio presenter, model , DJ , journalist and actress . She has appeared on Channel 4 , BBC , NBC and BBC Radio 1, among others .

Life

Early years and health problems

Jamil was born to an Indian father and a Pakistani mother on February 25, 1986 in London . She was born with congenital hearing loss and labyrinthitis and had multiple operations to correct these diseases. In 2015, she stated that she could hear 70% with her left ear and 50% with her right ear .

At school she was shy and a bookworm. She was particularly interested in the subjects of art and biology . At the age of 17, she was in a car accident after chasing a bee , breaking several bones and damaging her spine . At first she was told that she might never walk again, but she slowly learned to walk again through physical therapy and medication.

Jamil taught English to overseas students at the Callan School of English on Oxford Street and later also worked as a model, photographer and fashion scout for Premier Model Management Limited.

Career

Appearances in print media and as a model

Jamil was photographed by David Bailey for Vogue magazine in January 2010 and appeared in the British Editorial Class of 2010. Between 2012 and 2014, she wrote columns for Company women's magazine . She has also written for Cosmopolitan Magazine and the Huffington Post . She had other jobs as a model for Glamor , Cosmopolitan Magazine Teen Vogue. She also became a model for Maybelline and Nails Inc. in 2012. In June 2012, she started a collaboration with Very.co.uk to launch her first fashion collection. In 2012 she was also nominated for her writing by the British Society of Magazine Editors and Professional Publishers Association for the award ceremony.

Her first appearance on a US cover was in The Cut in February 2018.

TV and radio career

She made her first television appearance in late 2008 on the television program Music Zone . In 2009 she began to moderate on T4 , where she interviewed celebrities, among others. After Alexa Chung left the morning show Freshly Squeezed in January 2009 , she took the position together with Nick Grimshaw . In January 2012, she took over from June Sarpong in Playing It Straight . She also hosted the online fashion show The Closet, produced by Twenty Twenty Television and published on the social media site Bebo . Between 2013 and January 2015, she hosted The Official Chart and The Official Chart Update on BBC Radio 1 with Scott Mills , making her the first woman in the program's history.

Since September 2016 she has played the leading role Tahani Al-Jamil in the television series The Good Place . She stated that she didn't know much beforehand about what the series is about and that this was her first acting role.

Activism and charity

In 2015, she started the event agency Why Not People? To make live entertainment accessible to people with disabilities. In March 2017, she started the Instagram blog I Weigh to highlight the character values ​​of women over the external ones. Followers share selfies with the hashtag #iweigh and a text or individual words that describe why they are proud of themselves. She was inspired by a photo of Khloé Kardashian , Kim Kardashian and Kourtney Kardashian .

She is also involved in several charitable causes. She supports the Cultural Learning Alliance, which advocates culture for children and young people, and the youth organization Vinspired National Awards. She also designed a SpongeBob SquarePants costume for a charity campaign for children and wore a chicken costume for Comic Relief for 16 days , as 1000 pounds are donated every day and thus she collected around 16,000 pounds.

Private matters and allegations

Since 2015 is in a relationship with the musician James Blake . After alleging she was a bad Muslim in 2018, she publicly announced that she was not a Muslim and that she did not follow any religion.
