Bebo

Bebo is a social network that had a strong position, especially in England in 2007 , but then fell significantly behind Facebook .

The company was founded in 2005 by the Birch couple in San Francisco , at times had 25 million members and competed with Myspace , which has been part of the News Corp. since the summer of 2005 . - belonged to the empire (until 2011).

Bebo was particularly popular in Europe and Oceania : Europeans made up 62.5 percent of the Bebo community. However, Bebo is largely unknown in many parts of Europe, such as Germany, because it was a purely English-language site for a long time.

In Great Britain, calculated on the basis of individual visits, Bebo even overtook the then world market leader Myspace in July 2007: 10.7 million Britons visited Bebo, while the figure for Myspace was 10.1 million. The third place, Facebook , had 7.6 million visits.

On March 13, 2008, the Time Warner group took over its Internet service AOL Bebo for $ 850 million. Time Warner boss Jeff Bewkes rated this as the “riskiest takeover” of his company that year.

On June 17, 2010, Bebo was sold to the Californian financial investor Criterion Capital Partners at an unknown price due to the unsuccessfulness of AOL. It should have been less than ten million dollars. In 2013, Bebo founder Michael Birch bought his website back for one million dollars.

In September 2012 it became known that an investing company led by Bebo had taken over the Berlin VZ networks from Holtzbrinck Digital . Regardless of the restructuring of the company, Bebo temporarily rose to become one of the largest platforms in Germany , mainly because the SchülerVZ was shut down at the end of April 2013 .
