Carmen Sandiego is an American animated series that premiered on January 18, 2019 on the Netflix streaming service . It is based on the educational software of the same name - computer games from the developer Brøderbund .

The series represents the prehistory of the title character of the same name, she is after the two game shows Hunt around the world - snaps Carmen Sandiego and Where in Time Is Carmen Sandiego? and the animated series Where is Carmen Sandiego? the fourth adaptation of the game series. Carmen Sandiego is a master thief and a member of the secret organization International League of Criminals (in the original Villain's International League of Evil , VILE for short ), where she grew up as an orphan . When Carmen realizes one day that her employer is not afraid of violence, she changes sides and steals the league's illegally acquired funds to give them back to the victims. She receives support from Player, a hacker , and siblings Ivy and Zack from Boston . The siblings helped Carmen rob a donut shop that was actually only used as a cover for League operations . During her job , she is persecuted by the Interpol agents Chase Devineaux from France and Julia Argent from Great Britain , as they know nothing of the existence of VILE and consider Carmen to be a criminal. The two are finally recruited by the Agency to Classify & Monitor Evildoers ( ACME for short ), which Carmen is also watching.

Carmen's main opponents include her former trainer at the academy. These include Professor Maelstrom, who teaches psychological manipulation ; Shadow-san, also a thief and master of swords ; Coach Brunt, who acted as surrogate mother for Carmen and taught her fighting techniques; Dr. Saira Bellum, a very talented inventor and technology teacher, and Countess Cleo, who brings culture and good manners to students.

Carmen's other enemies are their former colleagues, that the agents of VILE These are mainly Gray, Sheena, Antonio and Jean Paul, the pseudonym carry Crackle, Tigress, El Topo and Le Chevre; and Paper Star, which uses origami figures as weapons and appears to have psychopathic traits.

On April 14, 2017, an article on The Tracking Board website , which published inside information on Hollywood productions, alleged that Netflix was producing an animated series about Carmen Sandiego and that Gina Rodriguez would be the lead character. The series should be both entertaining and educational, similar to the previous adaptations. Rodriguez confirmed the authenticity of this information the following day through her Twitter account. A few days later, Netflix announced that it had ordered an animated Carmen Sandiego series with 20 episodes.

The show's showrunner is Duane Capizzi , who co-created the animated series Transformers: Prime and The Batman . HMH Productions and DHX Media act as production companies. HMH Productions belongs to the publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt , who acquired the rights to the franchise in 2002, DHX Media owns the rights to the first cartoon adaptation. In March 2018, Netflix announced that it would produce a real-life film about Carmen Sandiego, in which the character will also be played by Gina Rodriguez.

When Carmen finds treasure near a shipwreck in Ecuador , her former classmate El Topo engages her in an underwater battle, while another agent, Le Chèvre, attacks Ivy and Zack. When they arrive on the mainland, El Topo and Le Chevre let the three of them off because they are chasing a tuna that has swallowed a coin from the treasure chest. Carmen visits Dr. Pilar Marquez, who tells her that the coin in question dates from 1830 and is therefore of great value. The episode starts a week after the end of the first season.
