The Art of the Dead Man (Original Title: Velvet Buzzsaw ) is a horror thriller by Dan Gilroy , which premiered in January 2019 as part of the Sundance Film Festival . The film was released on Netflix on February 1, 2019 .

In the ruthless art scene of Los Angeles, aspiring agent Josephina comes across hundreds of dazzling paintings after an elderly tenant dies in her building. She ignores the instructions left by the unknown artist that his work should be destroyed and immediately begins circulating the paintings.

The paintings quickly caught the attention of the heavyweights of the art scene, including their boss Rhodora Haze, art critic and Josephina's lover Morf Vandewalt, and a number of collectors and curators such as Bryson and Gretchen. Soon there was a lot of excitement in the art scene, and the works of art by the hitherto unknown painter caused the greatest euphoria. But the enthusiasm has its price, as not only the buyers notice very quickly, because a supernatural force seems to punish all those who profit from the work of the deceased artist.

It was directed by Dan Gilroy , who also wrote the script. The leading roles of Morf Vandewalt and Rhodora Haze were cast with Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo . Zawe Ashton took on the role of Josephina. Other roles have been cast with Toni Collette , John Malkovich , Natalia Dyer , Billy Magnussen , Tom Sturridge and Daveed Diggs .

Filming began in Los Angeles in early March 2018.

A first trailer was presented in early January 2019. The film premiered on January 27, 2019 as part of the Sundance Film Festival . The film was released on Netflix on February 1, 2019 .

So far, the film has received a rather positive rating from 75 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics, with an average of 6.4 out of a possible 10 points.
