In the course of the protests surrounding the death of George Floyd , Wallace became known nationwide. He was committed to Black Lives Matter and the removal of the Confederate States flag at competitive events, whereupon a rope was found in Wallace's garage in the pit lane on June 21, 2020. However, the FBI soon expressed doubts about the authenticity of the story, which was not classified as a hate crime, since the alleged gallows rope has been hanging in the box as a pulling rope for the garage door since at least October 2019, after evaluating older photos.
