action

At the beginning, Adaline Bowman opens a box of film rolls at work, one of which tells her past. She was born in San Francisco on January 1, 1908 , and later met and fell in love with a Golden Gate Bridge engineer. After the wedding, they have a daughter - Flemming. Due to a tragic accident on the construction site, she becomes a widow at an early age. One night while driving a car in 1937, the now 29-year-old lost control of her car in an unusual snowstorm and fell into a small pond with the vehicle. She passes out and her heart stops beating in the ice cold water. When lightning strikes the pond, the young woman is revived. From then on Adaline Bowman no longer ages.

From now on Adaline can no longer lead a normal life and can never settle down in one place. She is initially pursued by the FBI, but is able to flee. That's why she gets forged ID cards and a new identity every ten years in order to avoid unpleasant questions and not end up as a test object in the laboratory. Only her daughter Flemming knows about her story. Flemming is now an old woman herself and pretends to be Adaline's grandmother in public.

During a New Year's Eve party in San Francisco, Adaline met a man named Ellis Jones, she is now 107 years old and uses the name Jenny. At first she flashes him several times, but Ellis persists and a romance develops between the two. Adaline is unsure because another move is planned soon - to Oregon. Finally, Ellis wants to introduce his new girlfriend to his parents. His father William Jones recognizes his former girlfriend Adaline in Jenny. He had a relationship with her over 40 years ago that ended when Adaline left him with the engagement ring without warning. William addresses them by their actual name. Jenny explains that Adaline was her mother, who however died six years ago, whereupon William is dismayed.

As William remembers that time with Adaline, it becomes clear that he remains unsure about his son's girlfriend. When he recognizes a scar on her hand, he confronts her. Overtaken by the past, Adaline decides to leave the family and her boyfriend and drives away in the car. Ellis wants to follow her, but is first stopped by his father. After a brief conversation between the two of them, in which Ellis makes it clear that he cannot live without Adaline, William throws him the keys to his car and Ellis tries to follow Adaline.

Adaline is now in a car accident. She had decided to turn again and no longer hide, and was rammed by another vehicle. Your heart stops beating again after 78 years in the freezing cold. Ellis finds the wrecked car and tries to reanimate Adaline, but is unsuccessful. The arriving emergency doctors can ultimately revive Adaline with a defibrillator .

At the hospital, Adaline is talking to Ellis. When her daughter joins them and introduces herself as her grandmother, Adaline indicates that Ellis knows. After a leap in time of a year, you can see Ellis and Adaline go out in their apartment. While Ellis goes ahead, Adaline looks at herself again in the mirror. She recognizes her first gray hair and is happy that she is getting older.

reception

The film received mostly positive reviews. In particular, the acting achievements were praised, above all that of Harrison Ford, who, according to the film releases, has delivered his “best performance in many years”.

The film service saw a “fairytale-like drama, with its themes of love and death, transience and longing, demanding and quite moving drama”, which is increasingly turning into a romantic love story. However, it was criticized that the discussion of contemporary history is largely left out.

Cinema received the film positively. “While the whole world dreams of eternal youth, Forever Adaline illuminates the dark side of immortality.” This is how parallels to Nicholas Sparks ( Like a Single Day ) were discovered . They praised the “nostalgic charm of the film” and the recklessness which the director showed.
