Fairhope, Alabama. After Matt learns that his terminally ill wife Nicole has only six months to live, his best friend Dane moves in with them to help. However, his influence on the whole family is far greater than anyone could have imagined.

The film is based on Matthew Teague's The Friend: Love Is Not a Big Enough Word , which was published in Esquire magazine in May 2015 . In it, Teague tells about his 34-year-old wife Nicole, who is suffering from cancer, and how Dane Faucheux helped them to question their morals, ethics and laws when accompanying them into death.

Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite while Brad Ingelsby adapted Teagues articles for the film. He had worked closely with Ingelsby on the script, which, in his opinion, captured the heart of the story and showed the deeply felt love, loss and the saving gift of friendship.

Dakota Johnson took on the role of cancer-stricken Nicole Teague. Casey Affleck plays her husband Matthew "Matt" Teague. Jason Segel can be seen in the title role of her friend Dane Faucheux.

Filming took place in February and March 2019 in Fairhope, Alabama, the location of the film. Joe Anderson acted as cameraman .

The film music was composed by Rob Simonsen .

The film premiered on September 6, 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Special Presentations.
