action

Adam Jones leads the life of a rock star that is marked by success, passion and extremely excessive. This lifestyle leads him to lose his job as head chef in one of the most exclusive starred restaurants in Paris . Two years later, after coping with the events in France, he shows up at his old friend Tony's in London and wants to make his restaurant the new top address. Tony, who is convinced of his friend's genius, but also knows his excessive past, finally agrees, and Adam has a new job.

He only wants the best in the scene for his team in order to finally get three Michelin stars . He has also made it into his head to win over the extraordinarily talented and very attractive cook Helene for his new restaurant. Helene can't stand Adam because he drives his employees crazy with his obsession with a perfect menu. But they have one thing in common: the passion for cooking and the pressure and energy in the kitchen, without which they cannot live. Now it's up to Adam to learn that they can only be successful as a team in the gourmet world of London. Eventually Adam and Helene become a couple, and his restaurant is awarded three stars.

reception

criticism

In the United States, the film received rather moderate to negative reviews: On the critique collection website Rotten Tomatoes it received 80 negative and 30 positive reviews out of 110 evaluated reviews. On Metacritic , the film received a Metascore of 42 based on 28 reviews.

In Germany, Katharina Zeckau wrote in the film service that the film was “a little subtle drama without psychological depth, in which the thin cognitive value is grotesque disproportionate to the international star ensemble”. Only in the description of the physically demanding kitchen work can "small, gripping highlights" succeed. But if you wanted to apply the main character's criterion of perfection to the film, “there would be only one thing left: into the bin!”.

The critic Kai Mihm, on the other hand, praised the filmmakers' ambition in the film magazine epd Film : You can clearly see in Rausch der Sterne that he wanted to paint a realistic picture of work in a top kitchen. "The jargon is right, the structures and processes seem authentic." But as "convincing" as Bradley Cooper is in the lead role, the portrayal of his choleric outbursts seemed "downright irresponsible". Violence in star kitchens is a “regular media topic”, especially in France, but Cooper's character is said to have “romanticized the humiliation of his employees as natural traits of a kitchen genius”. In addition, the film loses itself in subplots that seem “like dramaturgical concessions to a mass audience” and “correspondingly listlessly unwound”. As a result, the story “fatally loses focus, we don't learn anything about the really exciting things. About the creative processes (and thefts) among chefs, their hermetic living environment, the enormous monetary risks and the love-hate relationship with critics. "

The haute cuisine is not a wellness oasis, but neither is it a war zone, said Claire Beermann in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung : "But with all the doomsday drama, the gourmet cuisine here looks like a parallel universe populated by crazy people in love with themselves". Star chefs would have to struggle with this prejudice, "because not everyone can afford to look over their shoulders in their show kitchens when they create eight-course menus for 200 euros".

Gross profit

The film grossed $ 36.5 million at a production cost of about $ 20 million. Of this, 13.5 million were in the US market. In Germany and Austria the film grossed 300,000 and 100,000 US dollars, respectively.
