action

Simon Spier is a 17-year-old teenager at Creekwood High School in suburban Atlanta , Georgia . He has a family to which he is very important, consisting of his parents Emily and Jack and sister Nora. His three best friends are Leah and Nick, whom he has known since kindergarten, and Abby, who moved there from Washington, DC just a few months ago . He describes himself as having a completely normal life with a big secret: Nobody knows he's gay .

One day, Simon reads a message from an anonymous classmate who is also gay on the creeksecrets Tumblr page of the high school students. Reluctantly, Blue and Simon, who calls himself Jacques (in French the game is called Simon says Jacques a dit ), begin a friendship via email. When Simon forgets to log out of his e-mail account on the school computer, classmate Martin reads his e-mails and blackmails him with screenshots. In return, Simon is supposed to help Martin get together with Abby. Simon does this by trying to pair Nick with Leah even though Nick fell in love with Abby. At the same time, Simon tries to find out who he really is through clues in Blues emails; he fell in love with Blue. Three people come up for him in the course of the film: Bram, a football team-mate of Nick, but whom he sees kissing a girl at a Halloween party; Lyle, a former classmate and waiter at Waffle House , who is also interested in Abby; and Cal, who, however, denies being Blue.

After Martin, following Simon's advice, publicly asked Abby for a date at a football game but declined, he published the compromising screenshots on the Tumblr page on Christmas Eve and outed Simon. His friends Nick and Abby turn away from him because he has manipulated their relationship, and Leah also keeps her distance after she confesses to Simon that she is in love with him, which he misunderstood as feelings for Nick. Blue also breaks off the email contact. After a homophobic incident in the high school cafeteria, Simon reconciles with his friends. His father also affirms his love for him. Since Blue once wrote in an email that his life feels like a Ferris wheel , Simon invites him publicly to creeksecrets to the Ferris wheel at the local winter fair . At the very last moment, Blue arrives and it turns out to be Bram. In the end, Simon and Bram become a couple, and everything else falls into place.

Filming

Filming began in Atlanta , Georgia on March 6, 2017 and ended on April 23, 2017. On October 2, 2017, the title of the film was changed from Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda to Love, Simon . A scene in the book in which Simon visits a gay club for the first time in his life was cut from the film - in this cut scene, actor Colton Haynes also had a brief appearance as a club-goer who dances with Simon.

Knowing how expensive the music in the film would be, Berlanti decided to stop filming two days early. Commenting on the decision, he said, “I knew a lot of the film was being made in homage to films that had these great soundtracks that, at my age, you keep playing until they wear out. The soundtrack was the thing that made you feel the emotions of the film. So it was always on my wish-list to have a soundtrack that reflected that. It was very expensive and everyone wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing. I wanted to put more money into music. "

criticism

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes , the movie has a 91% rating based on 174 reviews, with an average rating of 7.3 / 10. On Metacritic , the film has an average rating of 72 out of 100 based on 38 critics, which means "generally positive reviews". The audience surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A +" on a scale from A + to F.

When it comes to film releases , Antje Wessels says that the “coming-of-age tragicomedy is one of the smartest and most touching contributions in young adult cinema”. The film "makes you smile after just ten seconds and soon cry more than once, until it leaves you with an absolute elation at the end". He has “what it takes to make a lasting impact on this cinema decade”.

Martin Schwickert of the Hannoverschen Allgemeine thinks the strip is a “conventional Hollywood product” in which “being gay at last is completely normal” “and the end is pretty kitschy”. "The backdrop of the ideal middle-class world" is not scratched, "so as not to burden the audience with further contradictions." But the film succeeds "with wit, charm and a good portion of romance in making its love story universally accessible". The story seems "pleasantly effortless".

Anastasia Barner says on funky.de that “even straight boys can watch the film without having to say 'No Homo'” and that “Coming-of-Age and Coming-Out” go well together.

Wolfgang M. Schmitt from the YouTube channel Die Filmanalyse generally considers the film to be a successful work. The film questions the idea of outing, since Simon imagines in one scene what it would be like if heterosexuals had to come out too. The normality shown is also a double-edged sword, according to Schmitt. On the one hand, the film shows that it is completely normal to be gay, on the other hand, a strong standardization is made. It would be shown that you could be anything as long as you lead a relatively normal life. Love, Simon wants to make a political statement, a plea for liberalism. The insistence on the normal also means an insistence on economic liberalism, which allows the free development of individuals, but only allows this if they do not question the economic system and the "current state" of society. No other problem is dealt with at any point. The society in the film only unites when the "current situation" is threatened by intolerance. This would e.g. B. by the final scene at the ferris wheel. Here, the participants would applaud each other and sell their innermost being. So if you accept the rules of the economic and social world, you will also be accepted by them, regardless of whether you are gay or straight.
