action

After the events of Suicide Squad , the Joker and Harley Quinn fled to Gotham . Amid their abusive relationship, the Joker breaks up with Harley and throws her out of the house. Eventually, Harley is picked up by an old man named Doc, who runs a Taiwanese restaurant in town.

After recovering a little emotionally, Harley spends the night in a club owned by Roman Sionis. He is a sadistic gangster with cruel tendencies who disguises himself as a lively nightclub owner. At the club, Harley meets Dinah Lance, a burlesque singer who works for Roman. Harley gets heavily drunk and acts aggressively in the club, resulting in her injuring Roman's driver. As a result, Roman Harley's thugs move outside, but Dinah is able to save them by taking out the men. Impressed by Dinah's skills, Roman appoints her as his new driver.

Dinah brings Harley to her house and Harley decides to transform her life in a variety of ways. This includes cutting her hair and adopting a hyena from a pet store she names after Bruce Wayne . Harley is also destroying Ace Chemicals , the place where she once committed herself to the Joker.

Meanwhile, Renee Montoya, a detective with the GCPD, arrives at Ace Chemicals and finds that Harley could be easily caught and arrested only because she broke up with Joker. At the same time, Roman sends Dinah and his sadistic henchman Victor Zsasz to get a diamond that contains the account numbers for the assets of the criminal Bertinelli family, who were killed years earlier. The young pickpocket Cassandra "Cass" Cain steals the diamond from Zsasz and swallows it after she was arrested.

The next day, Harley is intercepted by Montoya while roaming Gotham. Harley escapes before being ambushed by some of Roman's men. Harley kills her opponents, but is captured by other thugs who arrive on site. Zsasz and Dinah tell a novel about Cassandra. It is shown that Roman sometimes wears a black mask and sometimes tortures and tortures people to death for intimidation. Dinah and Zsasz inform him that they have captured Harley but that they cannot expect any retaliation from the Joker. To do this, they took Harley's destruction of Ace Chemicals as evidence that the two broke up.

Dinah clarifies the situation with Cass to Montoya, revealing that she is a mole in Roman's organization. When Harley breaks through the Fourth Wall again, she shares background information with the audience so they can keep up to date with what's going on in the film. Harley overhears Roman talking about the diamond and offers to get it from Cass if he spares her life. Roman agrees and gives her until midnight.

Nevertheless, he puts a bounty on Cass "so that it is more fun". Harley dresses up and breaks into the GCPD to find Cass. She frees her from the cell and the two flee. Harley takes Cass to an abandoned antique shop, where she is supposed to separate the diamond in order to return it to Roman. However, you are ambushed by some gunmen who are out for the bounty. Harley can overwhelm them, however.

The bounty also attracts Helena Bertinelli, a vigilante known as the “crossbow killer”. Targeting gangsters in hopes of avenging their murdered family, Helena plans to lure out Roman with Cass's help. Dinah informs Montoya about the bounty on Cass, but Zsasz tracks her down and informs Roman. Roman gets angry because he doesn't like an unfaithful subordinate and puts on his black mask, which makes him Black Mask .

Harley and Cass decide to hide in Harley's apartment. However, the apartment is attacked by people searching for Cass and it is revealed that Doc sold his lodger Harley to Roman. Harley calls Roman and agrees to swap Cass.

Roman sends Zsasz and Dinah to get Cass. Zsasz drugs Harley while revealing that Roman broke their deal. Meanwhile, Dinah tries to free Cass. Zsasz, who already knew about Dinah's betrayal, attacks her, but is unexpectedly killed by Helena, who arrives at the amusement park. The women are then arrested by Montoya, who previously texted Dinah regarding the situation. Harley manages to convince the women to work together to fight Roman, although the others are initially reluctant.

The women use Harley's old equipment and weapons to defend themselves against Romans' incoming thugs, from which they emerge as winners. Cass is picked up by Roman and Harley follows her to a nearby pier. When Harley catches up with her, Cassandra sticks a grenade into Roman's suit and Harley pushes him over the railing; in the following explosion he is killed.

Montoya, Dinah and Helena form the Birds of Prey with the money from the diamond's accounts , while Harley and Cassandra set up their own company.

In a post-credit scene , Harley brings up a secret about Batman ; before she can say it, however, the sound breaks off and the picture goes black.

production

Leading actress Margot Robbie

Shortly before the release of the film Suicide Squad , Warner Bros. announced an offshoot of the film with a focus on the character Harley Quinn in May 2016. Other characters from the DC universe such as Batgirl and the Birds of Prey team will also play a central role. Margot Robbie, who already played Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad and repeats the role in Birds of Prey, was announced as producer. In November of the same year, Christina Hodson was announced as a screenwriter.

Robbie worked on Birds of Prey for three years before Warner Bros. officials liked it. She campaigned for a woman to direct Birds of Prey. Finally, in April 2018, it was announced that Cathy Yan had signed a contract as a film director.

The original plan was for the penguin to appear in the film. However, after he was later cast in the movie The Batman , he was removed as a character from Birds of Prey .

Pre-production work began in July 2018. With a budget of 75 million US dollars, the budget is comparatively small compared to other film adaptations of the DC Extended Universe . Casting for the roles alongside Harley Quinn began in August 2018.

In September 2018 it was finally announced that Birds of Prey would be released in February 2020. The following month, Matthew Libatique was announced as cameraman. In November 2018, Robbie expanded the title to include the subtitle and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn , whereby the non-existent made-up word Fantabulous in the English language is intended to indicate the humorous and deliberately irrelevant tonality of the film. The German version of the subtitle was shortened to The Emancipation of Harley Quinn .

Under the working title Fox Force Five , filming began in Los Angeles in January 2019 . Although filming was also scheduled in Atlanta and Savannah , the full filming was held in Los Angeles due to a tax credit. Filming ended on April 15, 2019.

For marketing purposes, DC Comics planned to release comics with stories related to the film. These appeared from November 12, 2019. The world premiere took place on January 29, 2020 in London . The Blu-ray Disc and DVD was released in Germany on July 9, 2020.

Reviews

The film received mostly positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes received 311 positive and 89 negative reviews. Metacritic counted 36 positive, 21 mixed and 2 negative publications. The film received a metascore of 60 out of a possible 100 points. On the Internet Movie Database page, the weighted average score of 6.1 out of 10 was determined from 126,195 users.

Martin Schwickert rated the film as "good" in the Rheinische Post and said:

'Birds of Prey' should not be misunderstood as a feminist masterpiece of comic film art. But the film develops a shrill, lustfully anarchist bad girl charm that breathes a lot of fresh air into the ingrained, male-dominated genre. "

- Martin Schwickert

Lukas Gedziorowski from Deutschlandfunk Kultur described Birds of Prey as much more ambitious than its predecessor, Suicide Squad , and there was more experimentation. However, in the end, he “comes across with a mallet and fails because of the too large ensemble because he cannot do justice to the many secondary characters and does not give them an exciting or surprising plot. All in all, 'Birds of Prey' remains a pretty half-baked thing. "

David Kleingers from Spiegel remarked that even the title in the male-dominated superhero genre is a challenge. He also wrote:

In any case, the spectacle of director Cathy Yan and author Christina Hodson is not stingy with self-confident attitude, but it only affords an alibi-like touch of plot. As a garish, powerful but essentially good-hearted number revue, it relies entirely on the radiance of the punchy and powerful star Margot Robbie. "

- David Kleingers

Gross profit

With a budget of $ 84.5 million, the worldwide revenue from cinema screenings is $ 201.86 million, of which the film grossed 84.16 million in North America alone. In Germany, the film recorded a total of 488,721 admissions, which puts it in 12th place in the 2020 annual charts .
