The Suicide Squad ( Engl. For " Suicide Mission ") is a for the year 2021 of announced American action film . The film is based on the antihero team Suicide Squad from the comic book publisher DC Comics and is the eleventh film in the DC Extended Universe . In March 2016, even before the film Suicide Squad was released, a sequel, directed by David Ayer, was announced. Filming for the second part was scheduled for 2017. Ayer, who also directed the first part, announced in December 2016 that he would be directing the Gotham City Sirens offshoot instead of the Suicide Squad sequel . Unsuccessful negotiations with Mel Gibson and Jaume Collet-Serra followed to direct the Suicide Squad Sequel, and Ruben Fleischer , Daniel Espinosa and Jonathan Levine were also in discussion. In mid-March 2017 it was announced that Adam Cozad would act as a screenwriter for the Suicide Squad sequel.

Due to the schedule of Will Smith , who was to return from Suicide Squad in the role of Deadshot , it was announced in August 2017 that filming for the second part would start in autumn 2018 at the earliest. It was also announced the following month that Gavin O'Connor would be directing the second Suicide Squad film and that he would be co-writing the script with Anthony Tambakis . However, according to Warner Bros. , parent company of DC Comics, their final script ended up being too similar to the script for Birds of Prey: The Emancipation of Harley Quinn , which the company had already confirmed production. Then O'Connor left the project frustrated.

In the meantime, Walt Disney separated from James Gunn , who should also be responsible for the third part after the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 . Warner Bros. has expressed an interest in engaging Gunn for a film of his choice in the DC Extended Universe . He decided to write the script for a Suicide Squad film, which he could optionally direct.

In January 2019, it was confirmed that Gunn would also direct the second film about the Suicide Squad , now titled The Suicide Squad . It was also announced that the film would be released on August 6, 2021. The producers are Charles Roven and Peter Safran , who announced that The Suicide Squad will not be a sequel but a reboot of Suicide Squad . It was later The Suicide Squad described as a new approach to the Suicide Squad, which is based on the comics of the 1980s. In David Ayer's previous Suicide Squad film, the screenwriter was based on the New 52 comics of the 2010s.

Idris Elba , who is supposed to play a member of the Suicide Squad, was hired as the new actor . First he was supposed to take on the role of Deadshot from Will Smith. However, to keep the option of Smith returning in a future DC Extended Universe film , Elba ultimately plays a different role. The remaining cast of the Suicide Squad return to their roles in The Suicide Squad . In September 2019, director Gunn announced the entire cast of the film via Twitter .

It was previously announced in April 2019 that production for The Suicide Squad would begin with the end of Margot Robbie's work on Birds of Prey . Robbie plays Harley Quinn in the DC Extended Universe , who appears in both Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad . Filming of The Suicide Squad finally began on September 20, 2019 at Pinewood Studios in Fayetteville near Atlanta . Filming is to take place there for three months and then continue for one month in Panama . In between the studio recordings, outdoor shoots took place on October 13th in the North Druid Hills , a community-free census-designated place , two days later in Piedmont Park in Atlanta, on October 16 and 17 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway and on October 18, 2019 in Cartersville .

The film is scheduled to hit German cinemas on August 5, 2021 and the US cinemas the following day.
