Fayetteville is a city and also the county seat of Fayette County in the US state of Georgia with 15,945 inhabitants (as of 2010).

history
Fayetteville was founded in 1822 and made a city in 1888.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the 15,945 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 6,006 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.59 people per household. There are a total of 6,499 households.
71.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.14 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 39.7% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 27.3% of all households.
29.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 20.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 30.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 19.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 40 years. 45.6% of the population were male and 54.4% were female.
55.0% of the population identified themselves as whites , 33.9% as African-Americans , 0.4% as Indians and 6.6% as Asian Americans . 1.4% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.8% to several ethnic groups. 4.8% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

The Fayette County Courthouse , the Holliday-Dorsey-Fife House and the Tandy King House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
The Holliday-Dorsey-Fife House was built in 1855 by John Stiles Holliday, the uncle of the famous western gambler John Henry "Doc" Holliday . The Margaret Mitchell Library , built in 1948, is now used by the Fayette County Historical Society. Here, civil war and genealogical records kept.

Fayette County High School and Whitewater High School are the high schools serving Fayetteville and the surrounding area. The two schools are part of the Fayette County School Association .

The crime rate in 2010 was 213 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There was one murder, three rapes, 13 robberies, 22 assaults, 58 break-ins, 332 thefts and 24 car thefts.
The wrestler Chris Benoit (1967-2007) killed his wife Nancy and their son Daniel in Fayatteville before he committed suicide.
