Cathy Yan

Cathy Yan (Chinese: 閻 羽 茜) is a Sino-American director , screenwriter and producer . She is best known for her films Dead Pigs (2018) and Birds of Prey: The Emancipation of Harley Quinn (2020).

Life

Cathy Yan was born in China and lived near Washington DC until she was 14, by which time her interest in films was already solidifying. At the age of 14, Yan and her family moved to Hong Kong . There she grew up with the American and Chinese cultures.

Career

In 2008, Yan graduated from Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. a Bachelor of Arts. In the following, she worked as a journalist for magazines such as The Wall Street Journal . She started two more studies and in 2016 left the Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Film Program with an MFA degree in "Producing" and the New York University Stern School of Business with an MBA in "General management".

In 2013, while she was still a student, Yan worked on her first short film, Last Night .

Yan's debut came in 2018 with her feature film Dead Pigs . She found the inspiration for this film in an incident in 2013 in which 16,000 dead pigs drifted along the Huangpu River in Shanghai. Dead Pigs won a Special Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival that same year . With this award, the director first attracted attention within the film industry. Yan directed Birds of Prey: The Emancipation of Harley Quinn , released on February 7, 2020 . This is the eighth film in the DC Extended Universe . As the third female director, she became part of the DC Universe . An Asian woman has never directed a DC film before .

Yan has been working on her third film Sour Hearts for US film production company A24 since 2020 .
