Simon Langton

Simon Guy Charles Langton (born November 5, 1941 in Amersham , Buckinghamshire , England ) is a British director .

Life

Simon Langton was born in Amersham in 1941, the son of British actor David Langton , who played Richard Bellamy in the series The House on Eaton Place from 1971 to 1975 . He began his career in 1959 as assistant stage manager at the Folkestone Repertory Theater, followed by a position as stage manager at the Theater Royal Windsor from 1960 to 1962. Langton then worked for British television, for which he directed a number of series from 1970, including two episodes of The House on Eaton Place (1975). In 1983 he received a nomination for the BAFTA TV Award and the Emmy for Agent in his own cause (1979), a six-part film adaptation of the novel of the same name by John le Carré with Alec Guinness in the lead role.

Langton is best known, however, for directing the BBC multi-part series Pride and Prejudice (1995) with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth , based on Jane Austen's 1813 novel of the same name. This adaptation, for which Langton was once again nominated for a BAFTA TV Award became, received much critical acclaim and was a street sweeper in both Great Britain and the United States .
