Antonio Castillo

Antonio Canovas del Castillo del Rey (* 1908 in Madrid ; † 1984 ) was a Spanish fashion designer and costume designer who won an Oscar for best costume design in 1972 .

Life

Castillo worked as a fashion designer in the Paris fashion studios of Robert Piguet and Jeanne Paquin , before 1942 head of the fashion department of the company of Elizabeth Arden was and 1948 the Neiman Marcus Award winning fashion. In 1950 he joined the fashion company founded by Jeanne Lanvin and worked until 1963 as chief designer of the latter's fashion studio in Paris.

For the costumes in the performances of the musical Goldilocks written by Leroy Anderson , he received a 1959 Tony Award nomination for best costume design. After leaving the Lanvin fashion company , he founded his own fashion studio with Castillo in 1964 , which he gave up in 1969.

At the 1972 Academy Awards , Castillo, who only worked on the costumes for three films, won an Oscar for best costume design together with Yvonne Blake for the historical film Nikolaus und Alexandra (1971) about Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and directed by Franklin J. Schaffner his wife Alexandra with Michael Jayston , Janet Suzman and Roderic Noble in the lead roles . At the same time, both were nominated for the British Academy Film Award for the best costumes .
