Richard S. "Dick" Bruno (born August 21, 1924 in the United States , † January 11, 2012 in Port Townsend , Washington ) was an American costume designer and costume consultant.

Live and act

Richard S. Bruno received his artistic training at the University of Chicago and then worked for many years at Western Costume, the largest costume rental company in the USA based in Hollywood . Bruno began his film career in the 1950s with American International Pictures . At the age of 40, Bruno can be verified as a costume designer for films. From the beginning of 1965 Bruno initially designed the costumes for several B-film comedies, mostly designed for a young audience, or he worked as a costume advisor for Western Costume for these cheap films. A little later (at the end of the 1960s) Richard "Dick" Bruno was responsible for the cloakroom for some no less inexpensive films with youth-rebellious and high-horsepower content, including "Tomorrow the devil will get you wild in the streets" and "Rebels in leather jackets ". Bruno's rise to the A cinema league took place in the course of the 1970s when he worked with established film people such as Roman Polański (" Chinatown ") and Warren Beatty (" Heaven should wait ") . Since meeting Robert De Niro in 1976 (" New York, New York ") , Bruno has become a top costume designer for men's clothing. Since then Bruno has regularly designed De Niro's costumes, especially effective when he appeared in "Zeitstoffe", ie in costume-intensive stories that took place in America in the first half of the 20th century, including " Wie ein Wilder Stier , The King of Comedy , Es was once in America , The Untouchables - The Untouchables " and above all " Good Fellas - Three Decades in the Mafia " . For his timelessly elegant designs for this last-mentioned mafia film epic, Dick Bruno was awarded the BAFTA Award in 1991 .

In 1998 Richard "Dick" Bruno retired from the film business and spent his old age in the far northwest of the USA, in Washington state. In early 2012, at the time of his death, Mary Rose, President of the American Costume Designers Guild, praised his colleague in an obituary with the following words: “ Richard Bruno was a remarkably gifted designer, especially in designing costumes for male characters. Always a professional, he was well respected by the industry and will be greatly missed by all of us . "
