background
History of origin
- The role of driver was originally offered to Bruce Dern , who refused it.
- A total of three vehicles for the 1955 Chevrolet were used in the film. One of the cars was later driven by Harrison Ford in the film American Graffiti , and another model equipped with a roll bar was to be used in a rollover at the end of the film. However, this scene was not filmed; the vehicle was then used in the rollover scene in American Graffiti.
- The car was offered for sale in 2014.
- In this film, both Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson and singer-songwriter James Taylor had their first and only film roles.
- To determine the times during the races, Dennis Wilson used his own wristwatch, a Rolex Daytona, while filming .
- The film marked the debut of actress Laurie Bird (as the hitchhiker). She only starred in two other films before she committed suicide in 1979.
In 2012, asphalt racing was added to the National Film Registry .
Reviews
“He was a romantic in the spirit of Albert Camus, said Monte Hellman, 'I long for what cannot be.' His film 'Asphaltrennen' dreams of this land of freedom, space and aloof silence, its size is far ahead of similar works like 'Easy Rider', 'Vanishing Point', Walter Hills 'The Driver'. "
