Mercury fountain in the courtyard of the Moravian Museum

The Merkurbrunnen , Czech Merkurova kašna even kašna Ctyr živlů was a baroque urban running fountain in Brno , Czech Republic .

The fountain was built in the years 1693–1699 by Ignaz Johann Bendl from Kaiserstein from the imperial quarry on Leithaberg , on today's Freedom Square ( náměstí Svobody ). It had a polygonal plan with a diameter of about 7.5 meters. In the middle was a monumental 5.5 meter high sculpture. Two male statues symbolize the Svitava and Svratka rivers , the third - a nymph - holds a cornucopia as a symbol of the country's wealth. The central figure is the statue of Mercury , whose outstretched hand symbolizes the flourishing Brno trade. The fountain was probably fed by the third municipal aqueduct from Královo Pole .

In addition to the factual explanation offered here, this work of art naturally also has a spiritual message, here Bohemian-Moravian history is represented symbolically.

In 1867 the fountain was removed. The material of the well basin was sold. The sculpture was given to the Moravian State Museum , in whose courtyard the fountain is located today.
