The Svitava ( German Zwitta , also Zwittawa ) is a left tributary of the Svratka in the Czech Republic .
It rises three kilometers northwest of Svitavy in the Zwittau hill country ( Svitavská pahorkatina ) at 453 m above sea level. NN near the village of Javorník and formed a natural border between Bohemia and Moravia on its upper reaches .
At its run to the southeast are the places Svitavy , Lány , Hradec nad Svitavou , Březová nad Svitavou , Brněnec , Rozhraní , Letovice , Svitávka , Mladkov u Boskovic, Skalice nad Svitavou , Lhota Rapotina , Doubravice nad Svitavou , Rájec-Jestřebí , Ráječko and Blansko , where she makes her way through the Drahaner Bergland . East of the Svitava there is the landscape of the Moravian Karst .
Other places on the river are Adamov u Brna , Bílovice nad Svitavou and Brno . On the southern outskirts of Brno, the Svitava flows into the Svratka after 97 km at Přízřenice.
The Svitava has a catchment area of 1150 km². In 1997 the Svitava caused an extreme flood, floods of minor extent occur again and again, the last one was in 2006.
