action

Insurgents in the African province of Momkaba are causing more and more problems for the Soviet occupation. The Soviets have long underestimated the Sundata-led insurgents. The perfectly trained Soviet special agent Nikolai Garunjevich Rachienko is assigned to kill Sundata. Through his companion Kallunda Kintash, whom he freed from prison and who considers him a deserter, he manages to get to the hiding place of Sundata. The following night, however, his attempted murder fails, he is abandoned by the Africans, picked up by the Soviets and handed over to the Cubans, who occupy the country together with the Soviets. He is said to receive the death penalty for treason, but manages to escape. When Nikolai collapses from exhaustion, he is stung by a scorpion. A Bushman helps him and nurses him back to health. After a chemical weapons attack on the Bushmen village, he returns to the insurgents. He now supports the locals in the liberation struggle and is successful. The Soviet and Cuban troops are crushed. In the end, Nikolai kills his former superior General Vortek, who tries in vain to escape by helicopter.

Production notes

Swaziland did not issue a filming permit, so they had to move to Namibia . At that time, Namibia as South West Africa was externally administered by the South African apartheid regime. Warner Bros. therefore withdrew from production. The anti-apartheid organization Artists and Athletes Against Apartheid condemned the production and saw it as a violation of the anti-South African embargo. Craig Williamson , a former major in the South African police force , helped with the filming. The American producer Jack Abramoff was also the head of the anti-communist lobby organization International Freedom Foundation (IFF), which was founded in Washington, DC in 1986 and, according to Williamson, should be "an instrument of political warfare against the enemies of apartheid". Williamson was responsible for the IFF in South Africa.

Reviews

Richard Harrington criticized in the Washington Post on April 22, 1989 the lack of originality of the film, which he compared to the films Rambo and Rocky .

"An action film that is as hateful as it is primitive."

expenditure

The film was released in August 1989 on VHS and laser disc. Synapse Films released a Blu-ray / DVD collector's edition with many extras in the US in June 2012.

The film Red Scorpion 2 from 1994 was also produced by Jack Abramoff, but it has no references to the first part and in which Dolph Lundgren no longer plays.
