Pilar Bardem Muñoz (born March 14, 1939 in Seville , † July 17, 2021 in Madrid ) was a Spanish actress .

life and career

Bardem was born into a family of artists in 1939. Her parents were the two actors Rafael Bardem (1889–1972) and Matilde Muñoz Sampedro (1900–1969). Her brother was the film director Juan Antonio Bardem (1922-2002). Bardem's children are Carlos Bardem (* 1963), Mónica Bardem (* 1964) and Javier Bardem (* 1969), who are also active as actors and writers. She was the aunt of the director Miguel Bardem (* 1964).

Bardem began studying medicine, but she dropped out. In the meantime she worked as a model. From the 1970s, Bardem took on small roles in theater, film, television and operettas. She appeared in the film drama Varietés (1971) and the film comedy A Long Weekend (1977) by her brother Juan Antonio Bardem. This was followed by appearances in over 100 film and television productions by 2010. Bardem was particularly successful in the 1990s. The role of Doña Julia in Agustín Díaz Yanes ' drama Nadie hablará de nosotras cuando hayamos muerto (1995) earned her the 1996 Spanish Goya Film Prize and the Spanish Drama Union Prize (Premios Unión de Actores) for Best Supporting Actress . Bardem was able to build on this success in 2004 through the part of the writer María Zambrano in María querida , who received the renowned Cervantes Prize from a young journalist (played by María Botto ) and won it for herself. The lead role in the feature film by José Luis García Sánchez brought Bardem another Goya nomination. In 2009 she took on a leading role in Stefan Ruzowitzky's German-language cinema production Hexe Lilli - The Dragon and the Magic Book .

She has also made a name for herself through her commitment to socio-political issues. At the Goya awards ceremony in 2003, she caused a sensation with a statement against the Spanish involvement in the Iraq war . In 2010, Bardem, together with the director Pedro Almodóvar and the writer Juan Goytisolo, stood up for the examining magistrate Baltasar Garzón , who had initiated proceedings for crimes against humanity against numerous high-ranking decision-makers of the Franco regime (including General Francisco Franco himself).

Bardem was president of the non-profit organization AISGE (“Artistas, Intérpretes, Sociedad de Gestión”), which deals with the protection of intellectual property in the audiovisual sector. In 2005 she published her autobiography under the title La Bardem , on which her son Carlos worked.
