The Heinrich-Heine-Gymnasium was founded in 1969 as the "New-language high school of the Hubbelrath office for boys and girls". The grammar school was the first German grammar school that was allowed to bear the name Heinrich Heine . In the course of the dissolution of the community "Amt Hubbelrath" enforced by the municipal reorganization, the city of Mettmann became a school authority. The school has been located in a new building in the Metzkausen district since 1975 . The first headmaster of the grammar school was Hans Joachim Buch. After his retirement, Bernd Wiese, Sabine Thomas and the current headmaster Hanno Grannemann followed. The grammar school is mostly in four classes with the language sequence English from grade 5, French , Spanish or Latin from grade 6 and optionally French or Spanish as part of the so-called differentiated intermediate level. Russian was also offered at times in working groups . Since the school year 2010/11, the school has been run as a so-called full-day operation.

In the lower level, the students travel within North Rhine-Westphalia on a step-by-step journey with an educational nature , in the intermediate level there is a one-week ski course in Tyrol and in the upper level there is a course-related excursion.
