career

Youth and college

Daniel, son of Byron and Cheryl Gibson, attended Jones High School in his hometown Houston , graduating sixth in the 2004 class. Because of his talent for sport, which he discovered in his early years (his father also pursued a basketball career), he was offered a basketball scholarship from the University of Texas at Austin , which he also took advantage of.

Even as a so-called freshman , a player in his first year at university, Gibson was the best scorer (14.2 points per game), gave the most assists (121 in total) and also got the most steals (55 in total) for the team Texas Longhorns in the 2004/05 season.

In his second season (2005/06) as a sophomore , Gibson had almost identical statistics to the previous season (13.4 points per game, 116 assists, 49 steals). He graduated with a major in corporate communications that same year, left university, and agreed to participate in the 2006 NBA draft .

NBA career

Gibson was selected in the NBA Draft 2006 in 42nd place by the Cleveland Cavaliers and received the jersey number 1. In his first regular season with the Cavs ( 2006/07 ) he blossomed into the crowd favorite in Cleveland, clocking up a good 15 minutes average playing time per game and was able to achieve an average of almost five points per game.

Daniel Gibson (2009)

At the end of the season Cleveland was able to qualify for the playoffs and met in the final of the Eastern Conference on the Detroit Pistons . Gibson's big hour came in the last game of the series when he set a new personal record with 31 points and made it the first NBA final in the history of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

In the subsequent final game against the San Antonio Spurs , however, the Cavs did not have the slightest chance and were " swept " 0: 4 . Gibson was able to increase his points average in the playoffs to a remarkable average for a rookie of 8.3 points per game.
