The Konrad-Heresbach-Gymnasium is the older of the two high schools in Mettmann . The school is named after the humanist Konrad Heresbach , who was born in Mettmann in 1496 . Currently around 800 students are taught by around 70 teachers and trainee teachers on a half-day basis .

history

The school received its official recognition as a public teaching institution in 1904, but its history as a private school of the Protestant parish goes back to 1857. In 1926 the school moved to the old Prussian teachers' college (today's town hall building). In 1932 the school became a grammar school, where both boys and girls were taught. In 1935 the first Abitur certificates were issued. During the time of National Socialism in 1938 the high school was again a high school for boys and the girls were sent to a household branch. In 1943, the school had to cede the building to the district administration and moved into the smaller building of the later district military replacement office for about two decades. In the 1950s a new school building was planned behind the town hall. The new building was completed in 1962/63. Since then, the school has borne the name of the humanist Konrad Heresbach, who was born in Mettmann in 1496 . In 1964 another wing was added to the building, in which secondary school students from the Mettmann district were prepared in special classes for the Abitur. Due to the sharp increase in the number of pupils, another extension was added to the schoolyard in 1966/67. With the establishment of the second Mettmann Gymnasium, the number of pupils has been falling continuously since 1980. Since 1988 the Konrad-Heresbach-Gymnasium has been cooperating with the Heinrich-Heine-Gymnasium in the upper level course area . While in the late 2000s many North Rhine-Westphalian high schools introduced the bound full-day school , the Konrad-Heresbach-Gymnasium remained a classic half-day high school with partial afternoon classes and optional all-day care. The conversion of the grammar schools to the G8 and the resulting afternoon classes made it necessary to build a cafeteria . In 2011 the cafeteria extension with four classrooms above it was completed. Between 2012 and 2014 a large-scale renovation of the schoolyard took place.

Pedagogical focus

The Konrad-Heresbach-Gymnasium pursues the central idea of learning in social responsibility and sees itself as a place of learning and living . Values education (especially respect and responsibility ) and education for sustainable development are current focal points of the educational work. At the moment, the school also offers project classes in the test stage that are dedicated to specific topics of sustainability in temporary, interdisciplinary projects.

Cooperations

There is a cooperation with the Heinrich-Heine-Gymnasium , also located in Mettmann, for various subjects in the upper level. There is a cooperation with the Bochum Campus Velbert / Heiligenhaus in the area of compulsory elective computer science courses . In addition, the business group and the vocational orientation of the grammar school cooperate with the Mettmann-based FONDIUM.
