action

Spain in 1851: a gruesome series of murders terrifies a village. Beastly beaten up corpses are found in the nearby forest and terrify the residents. Everywhere there is talk of wolves who are in the adjacent forest and are supposed to be up to mischief at night. Not only stab wounds but also bite wounds were found on the corpses. The legend of the werewolves is therefore coming back to life . But the dead also have precise cuts in addition to their bite wounds. So you are not sure whether a werewolf is really at work here or a brutal murderer is up to mischief in the forests of Allariz .

The traveling grocer Manuel Romasanta, his wife Maria, their sister Barbara and daughter Teresa live in a remote hut in the forest. However, they soon pack their things to move to the next town after a wolf visited their home. However, Barbara is left behind because of hostilities with her sister Maria. A little later, Manuel reappears and reports on her new life. But what Barbara doesn't know at first: her sister is long dead and she is in great danger.

Manuel Romasanta seems like a witty gentleman - a blessed man who helps the poor, old and weak. In truth, however, the stylish, good-looking businessman is anything but that. He is a madman who first abuses and then kills women in order, among other things, to make soap or similar substances from their body fat. Nobody suspects that this gentleman is the cause behind all the brutal feminicides that have rocked the country for several years and that feed the legend of the terrible wolfman.

The suppressed love between the beautiful Barbara and Romasanta finally begins to blossom. Despite the previous tragedy of the death of their sister and niece, both experience wonderful days together and the "crackling" between the two is getting louder and louder. However, Barbara cannot suppress the death of her family and their doubts. So she soon finds herself in danger during her research and after an unsuccessful attack she realizes that her life too is now in danger.

On her escape, she meets a man named Antonio who claims to have already killed several times together with Romasanta. When she learns from the investigating law enforcement officers, the Spanish Queen, and the humanities scholar Prof. Phillips that Romasanta has meanwhile advanced to become a wanted mass murderer, she teams up with the hunters to Romasanta to arrest the "devil" and so on To atone for the murder of her family and other women and children.

When Romasanta is finally exposed, handed over to the police and arrested by his last potential victim, young Barbara, he gives the public a macabre explanation for his crimes: He claims that he is a werewolf and that he is the tool of dark forces.

criticism

Lexicon of international film : "Solidly staged, opulently equipped mixture of horror film and thriller."

Kino.de: “Polished serial killer drama meets respectfully quoted horror myth in this provisional climax and little masterpiece from Brian Yuzna's and Julio Fernández's Fantastic Factory. Based on a true story! "

background

The plot of the film is based on a true story: Manuel Blanco Romasanta, a traveling merchant in the Spanish region of Galicia , was charged in 1852 with the murder of 15 people, including Barbara Garcia's sisters and their children.

Romasanta testified that he and a man named Antonio actually killed together as werewolves several times. The true existence and identity of Antonio, however, could never be proven.

Upon receiving a letter from Professor Phillips stating that Romasanta had lycanthropy , Queen Isabel II changed the death sentence to life imprisonment. While Romasanta was waiting for a full pardon, he died in prison in an unexplained manner.
