Michael Patrick William Stone (born June 2, 1925 in London, England , † May 18, 1995 in San Francisco , California ) was an American politician and Secretary of State of the United States between 1989 and 1993 .

Career

Michael Patrick William Stone was born on June 2, 1925 in London, England and immigrated to the United States in 1929. During World War II he served as a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm ( Naval Air ) of the British Royal Navy and the British aircraft carrier was HMS Glory (R62) allocated stationed in the Mediterranean and the Far East between 1943 and 1945.

After the war, Stone received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in 1948 . He then studied from 1948 to 1949 at New York University Law School . Upon graduation, he co-founded Sterling International , a paper manufacturer, between 1950 and 1964. He was also the company's vice president, serving in several of the company's branches, including Sterling Vineyards, between 1960 and 1982.

Stone was Head of the US Mission in Cairo , Egypt of the Agency for International Development from 1982 to 1985 , and Head of the Agency for International Development Caribbean Basin Initiative from 1985 to 1988.

From May 27, 1986 to May 12, 1988, Stone served as the United States' Deputy Secretary of the Army (in finance). At the same time he was also acting Deputy Secretary of the United States Army from February 28, 1988 to May 23, 1988. From May 24, 1988 to August 13, 1989 he was Deputy Secretary of the United States and Army Acquisition Executive . While serving as Deputy Secretary of the Army of the United States, he carried out the procurement duties of the Deputy Secretary of Defense from May 13, 1989 to August 10, 1989. He was then promoted to Secretary of State for the United States. His term of office ran from August 14, 1989 to January 19, 1993. He was also Chairman of the Authority for the Panama Canal Zone between 1990 and 1993.

Michael Patrick William Stone died on May 18, 1995 in San Francisco, California.
