Clifford Leopold Alexander junior (born September 21, 1933 in New York City ) is an American lawyer, businessman and civil servant. He was the first African American to serve as the United States Secretary of the Army .

Career

Clifford Leopold Alexander, Jr. was born on September 21, 1933 in New York City and attended the Ethical Culture and Fieldston Schools there . He received his PhD from Harvard University in 1955 and Yale University Law School in 1958 . In the same year he enlisted in the New York National Guard and served cursory in the 369th Field Artillery Battalion in Fort Dix , New Jersey . In 1959 he married Adele Logan.

After being admitted to the bar, he served as assistant district attorney in New York County from 1959 to 1961. He then became executive director of the Manhattanville Hamilton Grange Neighborhood Conservation Project , and program and executive director of Harlem Youth Opportunities . He also practiced as a lawyer in New York City.

In 1963, he went to Washington, DC , to serve as the Foreign Affairs Officer of the National Security Council Staff and was successively Deputy Special Assistant to the President, Associate Special Counsel, and Deputy Special Counsel of the White House Staff from 1964 to 1967. He was then Chairman of the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission between 1967 and 1969 and a special steward of the President and headed the US delegation at the 1968 independence celebrations for the Kingdom of Swaziland .

After he left the governorship, he practiced as a Washington attorney with the Arnold and Porter law firm from 1969 to 1975. From 1972-1976 he was a television commentator in Washington DC, and between 1973 and 1974 professor of law at Howard University . In 1974, Alexander stood as a candidate for mayor in the District of Columbia , but he failed. He then became a partner in the law firm of Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Alexander in 1975.

Clifford Leopold Alexander, Jr. served as Secretary of the United States Army Secretary in the Carter Administration from February 14, 1977 through January 20, 1981. During that time, he focused on doing all of the Army volunteer work, emphasizing skill improvement programs, and again the awards of minority companies.

In 1981 he founded the consulting firm Alexander and Associates and worked for several boards of directors of national stock corporations. He was also a member of the board of directors of the American Stock Exchange .

He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Brotherhood.
