Eric Kenneth Fanning (born July 2, 1968 in Kalamazoo , Michigan ) is an American government official. He served as the Department of Defense's chief of staff under Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter . Previously, he was Under Secretary of the Air Force and, from June to December 2013, managing director of the United States Secretary of the Air Force . From May 2016 to January 2017, he served as the United States Secretary of the Army .

Life

Education

Eric Fanning grew up in Michigan and Ohio and studied at Dartmouth College until 1990 story , which he graduated with a Bachelor from. According to his own statements, he was interested in the New Hampshire primaries for the 1988 presidential election .

As early as the 1990s, Fanning worked in the Pentagon, at that time in the House Armed Services Committee and in the office of the Secretary of Defense . With the resignation of Michael Donley as Secretary , he was appointed on August 21 , 2012 June 2013 Acting Secretary and continued official business until the appointment of Deborah Lee James in December 2013.

In September 2015, Fanning was appointed acting head of the Department of the Army to succeed John M. McHugh . After another interim administration by Patrick Murphy , Fanning was proposed by President Obama as the new Secretary of the Army. The confirmation by the US Senate took place on May 18, 2016. With the end of Barack Obama's term of office on January 20, 2017, Fanning also resigned from his post.

Free economy

Stations outside of the state apparatus led Fanning to Business Executives for National Security , a think tank, and to Robinson, Lerer & Montgomery (now Young & Rubicam ), a communications company in New York .

homosexuality

Eric Fanning was the most senior self -confessed homosexual in the US Department of Defense and has positioned himself politically accordingly. He called for a corresponding regulation for the US armed forces that prohibits discrimination against gays and lesbians:

"I personally like to see these things in writing and codified."
