Barbara McConnell Barrett (born December 26, 1950 in Indiana County , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician , businesswoman, lawyer and diplomat . She has been the United States Secretary of the Air Force since October 2019 .

Life

Barbara Barrett studied Liberal Arts at Arizona State University in Tempe and, after gaining her Bachelor of Science in 1972, studied International Business, a degree from which she graduated in 1975 with a Master of Public Administration . In 1978 she earned her Juris Doctor . She worked as a lawyer until 1982, after which she became Vice Chairman of the US Civil Aeronautics Board in Washington, DC From 1985 to 1990 she worked again as a lawyer in Phoenix , Arizona, interrupted only by a year-long tenure at Federal Aviation from 1988 to 1989 Administration , again in Washington, DC

Since 1994 she has been running her own ranch , where cattle and bison are kept, as managing director . From 1997 to 1998 she was Chief Executive Officer of the American Management Association in New York City , and in 1999 she was a Fellow at the Kennedy School of Government , which belongs to Harvard University in Cambridge near Boston in the US state of Massachusetts . From 1999 to 2001, Barrett was President of the International Women's Forum .

She began her brief diplomatic career in 2006 as Senior Advisor to the US Mission to the United Nations, and then from 2008 to 2009 as US Ambassador of the United States to Finland . In 2013 she was appointed Chairman of the Board of Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo , California , before she was proposed and sworn in as Secretary of the Air Force in 2019 .

Barrett holds a private pilot license with instrument flight rating and has completed the US astronaut training.
