Josef Gülpers (born January 24, 1960 in Aachen ) is a German art historian , musician, art collector and writer .

Life

After graduating from secondary school in 1974, Gülpers began an apprenticeship as a baker, which he completed with the journeyman's examination in 1977. During his apprenticeship he discovered music for himself, took guitar lessons and founded a band with a friend, which gradually expanded with the increase in performances in schools, clubs and town festivals. After receiving his journeyman's certificate, Gülpers continued to work in the bakery, but did not lose his relationship with music. At the same time, he attended evening classes at the master school, which he graduated as one of the youngest in 1981 as a master. Gülpers then took lessons in classical singing and began to learn to play the piano in addition to playing the guitar. He bought an old Bechstein grand piano and turned the attic into a recording studio in his parents' house. At the same time he discovered his interest in the fine arts and began to build an art collection with exhibits from artists from different art eras.

Over time, work, making money, buying art and music could no longer be reconciled, so that at the age of 24 he gave up his baker's profession. From 1984 he attended an evening grammar school and graduated from high school in 1987. Although Gülpers was very interested in the practice of music and musicology, he decided to study for teaching and enrolled in 1987 at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn for the subjects of Latin and history. After one semester, he switched from Latin to German. In the didactic area, he put the focus of his education in history and German on museum educational work.

Parallel to his studies, he continued to take singing lessons and after his band split up, he worked as a solo entertainer at private and public events throughout Germany, equipped with a keyboard. In 1993 he completed his studies in German and history with the 1st state examination. From 1995 to 1997 he did his legal clerkship at the municipal Rurtalgymnasium in Düren and finished it with the 2nd state examination.

With his combination of subjects, Gülpers did not find a job as a teacher after graduating. Then he began to give tutoring and set up a tutoring school. He also built a music school for guitar and piano lessons. His professional life began in 1997 as a musician, tutor and music teacher, and later as a historian, art historian and museum guide, art collector and writer.

In 1988 Gülpers also began studying art history at RWTH Aachen University . After completing his master's degree , he received his doctorate in 2015 with a dissertation on the topic: Picasso: Working with Others .

The collection of works of art from the various epochs of art that began in his youth had grown to a considerable size. First of all, the collection should be structured in such a way that one or two works should be represented from each epoch starting with antiquity. The oldest work is an Egyptian death mask from 1200 BC. Ch. Several important works from the Middle Ages are in the inventory - including a work by Lucas Cranach the Elder . The modern art movements are represented by works by Marc Chagall , Pablo Picasso , Josef Scharl , Karl Otto Götz and Joseph Beuys , among others . At the beginning of the 21st century, the collection was replenished with works by contemporary artists from the wider regional Aachen area. Represented here - some with several works - are listed as examples Ernst Wille , Hermann Josef Mispelbaum , Emil Sorge , Hartmut Ritzerfeld , Dieter Crumbiegel , Karl von Monschau , Sigrid von Lintig , Jupp Linssen , Tim Berresheim , Franz Buchholz , Klaus Endrikat , Wilhelm Schürmann , Alice Smeets , Günther Knipp , August von Brandis , Walter Dohmen and Dieter Call .

Inspired by visits to the performances of the reciter Lutz Görner , he also turns to writing poetry. He publishes a large number of poems, short stories and novels, which he presents in readings.

Gülpers is divorced and has two daughters.
