Live and act

The artist, who was born as Karl H. Winter at Monschau Castle , left the Kaiser-Karls-Gymnasium in Aachen in 1958 and, after completing his training, adopted the artist name Karl von Monschau, based on his hometown. He then set up his first studio in Aachen in 1965 on Monheimsallee. In 1972 he and the Belgian artist Michel de Witte were invited to a first major exhibition in the Neue Galerie - Ludwig Collection . Subsequently and up to the present day there have been hundreds of solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad. In addition, he is also repeatedly involved as a curator of various art exhibitions, for example since 2005 in the exhibition series "Carte blanche" in the Aachen parish church of St. Corpus Christi , on the occasion of which an invited artist can bring another artist of his choice.

Together with Willy Gallinowski, Karl von Monschau created the “first official art vending machine in Germany” in 1979/1980 , which they presented to a broader public first in the Neue Galerie and in 1982 at Documenta 7 in front of the Fridericianum in Kassel . This art vending machine was a box with 50 boxes, which contained originals on wood and could be drawn for 1 DM.

Karl von Monschau campaigned for community initiatives for artists at an early stage in order to both support their exchange of experiences and to enable joint exhibition events. In 1979 von Monschau was one of the founding initiators of the Free Summer Academy Aachen (FSA) in the Aula Carolina , and he was subsequently elected rector, and in 1985 he was one of the founding members of the New Aachen Art Association (NAK). The establishment of the regional group Aachen / Euregio in the Federal Association of Visual Artists (BBK) in 1995 was largely initiated by him. In addition, following the example of Paul Claudel , Karl von Monschau set up the artist's Ash Wednesday in St. Corpus Christi , an encounter between church and art that takes place annually on Ash Wednesday in over 100 cities. Finally, in 2000, he founded the “Mobile Office for Art Affaires”, which appears among other things as a co-organizer and contact person at various events. With this “office”, Karl von Monschau, together with the Ludwig Forum and the Aachen Cultural Center, hosted the “ 1,000,050.Event initiated in 1973 by the Fluxus artist Robert Filliou and celebrated worldwide on January 17, 2013 . Birthday of art ”.

For his artistic commitment, Karl von Monschau received the “New Prize” from the New Aachen Art Association in 1988 and was also made an honorary member in 2005 by the BBK and in 2007 by the NAK.
