Art vending machine

An art vending machine (also one -of- a - kind ) is a self- service machine that donates small works of art or art messages as unique items . Art machines are, for example, disused cigarette , condom or chewing gum machines that have been converted to the euro . The art objects have the maximum size of the drawn boxes, but the box itself can also be, for example, a miniature work of art in the form of a folded picture.

Depending on the size of the art parcel and the content, the buyer can purchase a one-of-a-kind item or a limited edition small series by an artist for around € 2 to € 15. The exhibits come from different genres in the form of small graphics, pictures, sculptures or sculptures as well as texts in poetry or prose. USB sticks with audio and video files from audio books, video types and documentaries and free music from the fields of jazz, pop, rock and experimental are also available. The artist can provide information about himself and his artistic work as well as contact information on an "instruction leaflet". Sometimes the artist pays a contribution included in the purchase price for a social cause that is important to him .

Art from machines makes the artists and their art known to a wider public, which can also be done through the optical design of the machines by the artist. The buyers of the parcels can purchase the unique art pieces around the clock without fear of contact with galleries and museums and with the incentive to buy a surprise bag. B. also as a spontaneous souvenir .

Art machines are attached or set up in public spaces as well as in cafes, bars, hotels, etc. by special machine stands.

The two artists Karl von Monschau and Willy Gallinowski were one of the first to realize the idea of the art vending machine in 1979/80 at the Ludwig Forum for International Art in Aachen, and subsequently presented it to a broader public at documenta 7 in front of the Fridericianum (Kassel) in 1982 . This art vending machine was a box with 50 boxes, which contained originals on wood and could be drawn for 1 DM.

Another genre of art vending machines are electromechanical one-offs, which, in contrast to everyday services such as ticket sales, parking permits, etc., often produce a surprising "feat of art" when coins are inserted. Classic art vending machines can be found in London at the exit of the wax museum or in St. Croix in Switzerland. Bernhard Deutsch has been building a wide variety of art vending machines for 35 years , which were exhibited in the Hällisch-Fränkisches Museum in Schwäbisch Hall in 2013 .
