The New Aachen Art Association (NAK) is an association founded in Aachen in 1986 to promote contemporary art .

development

In order to bring contemporary art to an art-interested public in the Aachen area , the Neue Aachener Kunstverein was founded in 1986 by a group of committed citizens and artists. After the NAK was initially housed in simple inner-city shops, in 1988 it was given a larger and permanent exhibition and business space in Aachen's Rudolfstrasse. Increased exhibition activities and increasing popularity among the population made it necessary to move again in 2001. The association acquired a house in the Stadtgarten Aachen , where it could implement their new ideas over two floors and with flexible exhibition rooms.

Around five to seven exhibitions with national and international art have been shown annually since then. There are also lectures , readings or film evenings with the participating artists and other guests. Many artists, such as Dietmar Momm and Karl von Monschau , who are also among the founding members, as well as Jupp Linssen , Leni Hoffmann , Candida Höfer , Hartmut Ritzerfeld , Alexander Esters , Raoul Marek , Norbert Walter Peters but also Roman Signer , Gerhard Richter (printmaking ), Jonathan Meese , Franz Ackermann , Hanns Pastor , Christiane Dénes and Andreas Siekmann have exhibited at the NAK.

From the year it was founded until 1994, the NAK awarded the New Prize of the Aachen Art Association to artistic personalities whose commitment became known beyond Aachen and who campaigned for the mediation of fine art and whose works gained public attention.

The association is financed by a support and collectors group founded in 1999 , which has given itself the name " Twodo Collection " (twodo = two dozen). It consists of 24 people and, among other things, ensures the management of the association, communicates with selected artists and helps build a collection of contemporary art. In addition, the entire project is actively funded by people from politics , business and citizenship.

The New Aachen Art Association is a member of the German Art Association (ADKV). In the last few years it was headed by Susanne Titz (1997–2004) and her successors Stefanie Kreuzer (2004–2007), Melanie Bono (2007–2010), Dorothea Jendricke (2010–2013) and Ben Kaufmann (2013–2018). Maurice Funken has been director of the association since 2018. The New Aachen Art Association has 400 members.

On June 12, 2020, a fire emanating from garbage cans spread to the building of the Kunstverein and damaged the works of art next to the building at an exhibition planned for the following day.
