Life

Raoul Marek lives and works in Berlin , Bern and Paris . He grew up in Switzerland and Bern and studied art at the University of Zurich . Since 1981 Raoul Marek has been realizing installations, photographs, public art and network projects that use artistic means to put people and places into diverse relationships. Thanks to the interactive network projects "La salle du monde" and the participatory network "Color ... The Sound of Paysage", it is regarded as the forerunner of the artistic exploration of interpersonal relationships and sites-specific art (art and context) that was important in the 1990s . He is considered to be an important representative of the art movement Art relationnel, which emerged in France at the end of the 1990s

With the network project LA SALLE DU MONDE, which he has realized since 1993 for the contemporary art collection Château d'Oiron France and since 2004 in the city of Bern Switzerland , his work has gained international recognition.

In the mid-1990s, Raoul Marek and Voxi Bärenklau , Berlin founded the Institute for Synesthesia and Media in Berlin - ISM Berlin. Since 1995 joint short films on synaesthetic perception and the public performance Schreiendes Rot - Soirée of synaesthetic film (realized, among other things, Volksbühne am Rosa Luxemburgplatz, Berlin / Museum Kunst Palast, Düsseldorf / Istituto Svizzera, Rome). Since 1998 teaching concept for networked perception: "The perfume of the eyes" (networked communication and creation) with teaching assignments in Germany / France / Switzerland / China.

Raoul Marek brings questions into play that examine anthropological, sociological, cultural and philosophical positions. Raoul Marek's cross-media works in private and public spaces appeal to all the senses. They are linked to a current definition of the work of art, which understands the artistic work as an interdisciplinary process and network, where it is not primarily categorized and the various areas of culture, society and art are not isolated. Raoul Marek works in and with networks of relationships of perception, which are represented in site-specific works. Raoul Marek shows great versatility in his works. In terms of the techniques and media used, as well as the choice of locations, his works largely elude all stipulations.
