Talaimannar ( Tamil : தலைமன்னார், Sinhalese : තලෙයිමන්නාරම) is a place on the north coast of Mannar Island in the Sri Lankan Mannar District .
There is an occasional ferry connection from a pier built out into the sea via the Palkstrasse to Rameswaram on the Indian island of Pamban , if political conditions permit. The lighthouse built in 1915 is in the immediate vicinity .
Talaimannar used to be a port city with a ferry connection to Dhanushkodi on the Indian island of Pamban. There was a train connection to Colombo ; from Dhanushkodi there was a train connection to the Indian mainland. A cyclone in December 1964 completely destroyed Dhanushkodi with its port facilities and the railway line, the north coast of Mannar was also badly damaged and the port facilities of Talaimannar were destroyed. Since the traffic connections were not or could not be restored, the train connection to Talaimannar was temporarily abandoned. After the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka , the restoration was tackled, the train route to Talaimannar ( Mannar line ) was 90% repaired in 2014 and was reopened in 2015.
