Talaimannar Lighthouse , occasionally Mannar Iceland Lighthouse is a lighthouse ( English Lighthouse ) in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka . He is in Talaimannar , a place on the island of Mannar .

history

From 1914, Talaimannar was the starting point for a ferry across the Palkstrasse to Dhanushkodi in India . A year later, the 16.8 m high lighthouse was put into operation in the immediate vicinity of the pier . Because of a former beacon located further to the west, the tower is sometimes referred to as the New Talaimannar Lighthouse .

In December 1964 a cyclone destroyed the pier systems in both ports. After Dhanushkodi was not rebuilt, the ferry later ran to Rameswaram . Due to the civil war in Sri Lanka , however, the connection was finally shut down in the 1980s and the lighthouse was left to its fate.

After the end of the civil war, the anti-personnel mines in the area were cleared and the lighthouse was subsequently restored. As an identifier, it now shows a white flash with a return of 5 seconds.
