The island of Mannar ( Tamil : மன்னார் தீவு Mannar Tivu , . English Mannar Iceland ) is an island in the Mannar district of Sri Lanka . The island is connected to the rest of Sri Lanka by a causeway. It is about 130 km² and mostly covered with plants and sand. The Adams Bridge is an approximately 30 km long chain of sandbanks , coral reefs and islands between India and Sri Lanka. It runs from the island of Pamban , which is off the southeast coast of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu , and ends in Talaimannar on the island of Mannar. It is believed that the bridge was once a land bridge between India and Sri Lanka.

Between 1914 and 1964 there was a rail and ferry connection from India via Dhanushkodi and Talaimannar to Colombo , but this connection was not restored after the devastating damage caused by a cyclone in 1964.

Since the island is arid and barren, fishing is economically important.

The Mannar Town division of the Mannar district, which in addition to the island also includes part of the opposite mainland, had a population of 47,576 people in 2011. Most of them live in the towns of Mannar and Erukkulampiddi on the east coast and Pesalai on the north coast, all of which are connected by the A14 road, which crosses the bridge to mainland Sri Lanka.
