Patrick Joseph Murphy (born October 19, 1973 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician . Between 2007 and 2011 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Patrick Murphy attended Bucks County Community College in Newtown until 1991 and then King's College in Wilkes-Barre . He then became a cadet in the US Army training program , whose reserve he was a member after graduation. After completing a law degree and admission as a lawyer, he began to work in his new profession. Since 2000 he was active in the army. He lectured at various military schools, including the United States Military Academy at West Point . After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , he volunteered for a foreign assignment in the legal department of the army. He was stationed first in Bosnia and then in Iraq . He held the rank of captain. In 2004 he finished his military service in Fort Bragg ( North Carolina ).

Politically, Murphy joined the Democratic Party . In the 2006 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican Mike Fitzpatrick , whom he defeated in the election, on January 3, 2007 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 2011 . He sat on the Grants Committee and the Intelligence Services Committee, as well as a total of six sub-committees. In the 2010 congressional election, Murphy was defeated by his predecessor Fitzpatrick. In 2012 he ran for the office of Attorney General of Pennsylvania, but lost in the Democratic primary to the eventual winner of the actual election, Kathleen Kane .

Since the end of his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Patrick Murphy has worked as a lawyer with the Philadelphia-based law firm Fox Rothschild . He also gives occasional lectures at the Widener University School of Law .
