Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is a federal agency in the United States whose mission is to end employment and occupation discrimination. The EEOC investigates complaints of discrimination based on ethnic background, religion, gender, age or possible disability, as well as complaints when the detection or reporting of a discriminatory practice has led to countermeasures. The commission also has the task of bringing charges against employees in favor of possible victims or serving as an arbitration board in the event that the accusation is directed against a federal authority.
The EEOC's mandate is contained in Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 , the Equal Pay Act , the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and ADA Amendments Act of 2008 . It was founded on July 2, 1965, exactly one year after the Civil Rights Act was passed. The first chairman was Franklin Delano Roosevelt Jr. , who was appointed by US President Lyndon B. Johnson . EEOC is based in Washington, DC
